Merida Matts Trail, Diamondback Response, Specialized Hardrock, Specialized Rockhopper... In search of the perfect Mountain bike Every year cycle manufacturers spend countless millions on research & development, market research and advertising, attempting to create the perfect mid-range bike (£500-£600). We at Mikes Bikes agonise over “what makes the perfect bike”. The bike mags will tell you to spend £1500 on a “economical” MTB, our hire bikes have a harder life than any, and the models we choose retail at £500 ish, they stand up well to the abuse provided by hire customers. A well maintained £500 to £800 should cope with most uses. Spend more if you want a better fork, a lighter frame or to go Full-suss. We like to have 3-4 models in this price range from different manufacturers, our criteria are as follows:
For 2012 we have chosen these exceptional models: Diamondback Response: £500 Born in the USA, and designed for the British market, this has been What Mountain Bikes top MTB at £500 in 2010, and 2nd top 2011. In addition Mikes Bikes have used this bike for 3 years as its main hire bike, for two reasons its tough and its reliable. The 2012 spec list reads like an £800 bike!! Hydroformed frame, Rock Shox fork, Shimano Deore 27 speed, SRAM chainset, Truvativ Stylo risers, shimano hydraulics!! Bombproof, stylish and hardy. Specialized Hardrock: £500 The benchmark, the market leader, 2nd in 2010, 1st in 2011 (what Mountain Bike). Very little explanation is need here, this is the most requested bike at Mikes bikes, nothing is left to chance with this bike, it excels at comfort. Shimano 27 speed and bespoke specialized / suntour kit, available in two colours. Specialized Rockhopper: £600 -£800 Like the hardrock with a much lighter frame, and more trail oriented geometry. This is your entry to high end mountain biking, with the top bike sporting Rock Shox recon (air). This bike has never had a bad review!!! It also looks awesome in Black with lime green, or orange or white. This is the ultimate upgrade bike. Merida Matts trail: £500 -£1200 From the worlds biggest bike company, a hardcore trail centre focussed bike, a hardtail with all-mountain geometry and 130mm forks. This bikes focuses on downhill ability with hardtail flexibility, in otherwords it will cope with Laggan and take you to work!!! Only available in eye watering colours!!!! All of these bikes are available at Mikes Bikes.
